According to Jim Chalmers [7 May 2003] the signpost at Halley was made by Dave French in (he thinks) 1968, shortly after the IGY base was closed and during the first winter that the met dept was housed at the village [i.e. Halley-2]. It appears on the 1972 base photo. A better picture is Chris Johnson's, taken in 1979. Other pictures were taken in 1994 and 2001. In 1982 the sign was refurbished and converted from miles to kilometres.18 July 2004
