Millenium Reunion 10th November 2001

Comments

If you have any comments about the reunion, which should be considered by the organising committee for 50th Anniversary Reunion in 2006, please email them to Andy Smith at andy@smitha.demon.co.uk. Here are some already received.

To all 67/68 Z fids - though a long way off, lets make the next Halley reunion (2006) a real bumper. With 14 members of the 67/68 team at the 2001 reunion we were perhaps the best years represented. Pass the word on and lets have a big event.
To the organisers of this year, many thanks, good do and good to see old friends. As many people travel a long way, some a very long way, can I suggest a little more on the "entertainment" side. More input from other fids and perhaps a skit or two regenerate the old goings on!

I looked at 2 other venues in Northants which unfortunately could not accommodate the date(s) we required Both a lot better than Landmark e.g Marriot and Swallow hotels with full conferencing facilities adequate rooms and on the ball !!!

I was called away and did not have time to consider what I'd written. Great reunion last week. My comments about more entertainment were no criticism of the event, merely an idea for next time. Of course it would be virtually impossible to get teams of lads together to do skits or sketches but individuals could be asked to do turns: reminiscences, poems, "my best 5 slides", special events. In reality we had all this but I think more input from more people after dinner might rekindle some of the base cameraderie and better unite the many years. The Steve Venables idea was excellent, pity he stopped so soon! All the best and thanks for organising the whole event

As regards content, several people remarked, Tony in particular, that there was a lack of interest by younger people. We should try and understand that and see if we can get round it. That's a sort of selfish thing from my point of view as I knew about the past i.e. pre 1971 but not the future i.e. 1971 - 2001 and the stuff about the latest bases was fascinating.

The weekend went so quickly as these things often do and for the 50th we could have a more extended formal set of presentations. However getting the balance between a boringly long programme and a too brief set of sessions is difficult. However as well as another session on bases and science some others would be good. There was mentioned at the BAS reunion in Buxton in 1992 that the 35mm films taken at bases could be digitised and edited to produce some sort of compendium, I never heard anymore. However there must be enough material from Halley for a good enough film in its own right. If no-one else is interested that's certainly something I would like to pursue.

I asked one of the youngsters about price and he said the £25 seemed right, he went home that evening, so a long Saturday and short Sunday seemed right from his point of view. For others if you're coming and staying the ticket price is maybe about a third to a quarter of the overall cost of the deal so that price may be less important. Can we have on the discussion creches and babysitting.
